Lake Success, NY—Canon revealed its new flagship Rebel, the 18 megapixel Rebel T2i digital SLR, which is being marketed as a “family camera” positioned to bridge the gap between entry-level and prosumer models.
Its main features include a 3.0-inch 1.04-million-dot LCD with a 3:2 aspect ratio; 3.7-fps shooting; ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12,800); 63-zone dual-layer metering; a ±5 EV exposure compensation range; and Full HD 1080p video recording with manual exposure control, selectable frame rates and external microphone input. New for standard-definition recording is “movie crop,” which is added to provide 7x additional zoom for a “telephoto” effect with no loss of image quality. This is especially helpful for achieving extra full-res zoom power when filming youth sports.
The T2i’s manual video exposure control provides novices with the control they’re accustomed to in a still camera, while shooting cinematic video. For easier operation, its autofocus can be operated before or during video recording by pressing the shutter button halfway down. The camera captures video in NTSC and PAL standards at selectable rates of Full HD 1,920x1,080 at 30, 25 or 24 fps, and HD 1,280x720 or standard-def 640x480 at 60 or 50 fps. It also provides an external stereo microphone jack, a first for an EOS Rebel, in addition to its built-in monaural microphone. And its HDMI video-out capability lets users play back photos and video on a CEC-compliant HDTV using the TV remote to control the camera.
Pro-level functions include an auto ISO function that works in all creative zone exposure modes (including manual), where users set a limit to the highest ISO the camera uses. By setting an auto ISO range, videographers can retain dark shadow areas and avoid blowing out highlight areas while still retaining the benefit of automatic ISO adjustments.
The Rebel T2i offers additional pro-level user-selectable image-processing features to automatically enhance the quality of in-camera JPEGs and to tag RAW images for processing later through Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software (included). These include auto lighting optimizer to enhance shadow detail and add contrast; highlight tone priority that adds one stop of detail in bright highlight areas; peripheral illumination correction for automatic vignetting correction; high ISO noise reduction with four selectable settings; and long exposure noise reduction.
Canon’s EOS Rebel T2i, which is compatibility with Canon EX-series Speedlites and EF and EF-S lenses and supports SDXC cards, retails in March for $799.99 body only. It will also be offered in a kit with Canon’s EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens for $899.99. usa.canon.com
